Inspiration
The inspiration for the latin part of my song:
This is the inspiration for the metal part i want to incorporate into my song:
Musical Elements
Latin:
- slow tempo
- soft spoken vocals
- verse-chorus-verse structure
- clean guitar sound
- piano chord harmony
- traditional instrumentation - trumpets, violins, cowbell, bongos
- heavy group harmony on vocals
- lots of bridges
- major tonality
- lyrics about love and positivity
Metal:
- heavily distorted guitars
- screamed, aggressive vocals
- fast tempo
- power chords
- verse-chorus-verse structure
- repeated riffs
- negative lyrics about drugs and sometimes rebellion
- powerful rhythm
ideas for structure:
Regarding structure, i would like to start my fusion with a purely latin section. Then i would like to transition into my latin-metal fusion for the chorus. The second verse will be a purely metal section, before transitioning into another latin-metal fusion chorus. My outro will be small riff in latin style.
my latin percussion:
With my percussion section, i included cowbells and djembes which is very common instrumentation in latin music. I had a shaker playing what would usually be the hi-hat
Using the Bossa Nova chord progression on keys:
I was inspired by the Bossa Nova progression, so used 4 piano chords and a turnaround to create a Jobim type sound.
Using effects:
switching up chord progression:
I decided to change the chord progression to something slightly simpler in order for it to make it easier for me to play MIDI guitar over the top.
simple bassline:
I used the root notes from the piano chords to create a simple and quiet bassline as to not distract from the key features of the song.
Using EQ to tweak the sound of the bass
Today i used TAB to develop relative chords to the piano sequence. I plan on plucking the bass note and the high notes after each-other to create that common Latin sound.
Recording guitar using audio input on logic:
Today, i created a new audio track on my logic project. I plugged my guitar into the Scarlett box and played my guitar melody straight into logic. I then used the pedalboards and EQ to mess around with the sound of the guitar until it sounded mellow, but groovy.
Recording vocals
Today i added in vocals by plugging a microphone into the Scarlett box. I had my friend Kam hum into the mic to create a more ambient, calming feel to the track. I then selected a premade EQ and toggled it to my liking.
metal drums
by using a kick on the '1, 2 e, 3, 4e' it gives the affect of a double kick, which is commonly used in metal. I played around with the EQ to give a more sharp and slappy kick and used an open hi-hat to give the whole drums a louder sound.
