What is a record label? Record labels are companies that produce, distribute and promote the songs and content that artists create. What’s the different between big labels and independent labels? The ‘big four’ record labels; EMI, SONY, UNIVERSAL and WARNER are major conglomerates. This means that they own and profit off of many other smaller labels, for example: Columbia Records and Capitol. Indie records, however, are completely separate from the four big companies (independent), giving artists more creative freedom and control in exchange for a smaller scale of resources and publicity.
